DIFLUCAN
Diflucan is an antifungal agent that is available as tablets, suspension and in injection forms for intravenous use. It is useful in the treatment of external as well as internal fungal infections.
Diflucan is manufactured by Pfizer Inc. who also makes another drug with the same composition but under a different brand name called Trican.

Indications for Use
Diflucan is the treatment of choice for fungal infections where other antifungal agents have not been successful in controlling it or the patient has not been able to withstand the adverse effects of other drugs in treating the problem.
Diflucan is mainly used in the management of the following conditions where other drugs have failed in treatment:
Candidiasis caused by Candida albicans, coccidiodomycosis, Cryptococcal meningitis, cryptococcosis, tinea corporis, onychomycosis, histoplasmosis, fungal infections in immunocompromised patients, etc.
Dosage for Use
The drug is available in different forms namely tablets for oral administration, in the suspension form and in the form of injections for intravenous use. The tablets are available in several strengths starting from 50mg, 100mg, 150mg and 200mg. The oral suspension is in the form of a powder which possesses fluconazole in strengths of about 350mg or 1400mg. Diflucan in injection form is available for intravenous use and contains 2mg of fluconazole in sodium chloride or dextrose.
The dosage of the drug depends on the condition for which it is being used and on the age group to which the patient belongs. In most of the cases, the therapy is initiated with a higher dose which gets readily absorbed into the body and paves the way for further therapy. The dose is the slightly reduced and continued many a time for several days after the regression of symptoms to prevent chances of a relapse.
For vaginal candidiasis, a dose of 150mg/ day for a period of around 2 weeks is recommended. In cases of fungal infections of the skin, a dosage of about 150-300mg once in a week is prescribed. In cases of severe infections and life threatening infections like meningitis a dosage of up to 800mg in a day has been followed. The recommended dosage in children is about 6-12mg/kg in a day.
